Oklahoma State Auditor and Inspector Gary Jones
Oklahoma State Auditor Gary Jones has spent much of his adult life seeking to expand the accountability of elected officials and to improve the delivery of government services.
As a Certified Public Accountant and Certified Fraud Examiner, Gary understands the important contributions the State Auditor can make in identifying inefficiencies in government entities and in offering recommendations and solutions to provide a better product for taxpayers.
Gary’s strong, personal belief in the importance of public service led him to run for Comanche County Commissioner in 1994. During his four-year term, Gary’s district built a record-setting 34 new steel and concrete bridges and he played a key role in helping bring 1,000 new jobs to Comanche County.
Gary was born at Fort Sill, Oklahoma. His father served 23 years in the United States Army. Gary started school in Lawton but also attended school in Coleman, Texas and Hanua, Germany before graduating from Lawton Eisenhower High School in 1972. He attended college at Cameron University in Lawton and the University of Central Oklahoma, Edmond, earning a Bachelor of Business Administration and Accounting degree from Cameron University in 1978.
Along with Mary Jane, his wife of 34 years, Gary values Oklahoma’s rugged, rural heritage. They live on their farm southwest of Cache where, together, they raised two children, and built their cow-calf operation for over 30 years. Mary Jane retired in May, 2011, after a 36-year career teaching kindergarten.
Their son Chris is serving our nation on active duty with the United States Marine Corps and recently returned from a voluntary deployment in Afghanistan. Daughter, Kelly, is a math teacher at Cache High School. The Joneses also have three wonderful grandchildren.
When it comes to getting the most out of life, Gary Jones holds close the three traditional virtues of God, Country and Family. These values have defined his life as they have molded his character.
